As most of you already know, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate will be coming out for the Wii U and the 3DS March 19. Although I was excited for both versions of the game, I was ultimately looking forward to the Wii U version the most. There are two reasons for this. First, I hated not having a second analog stick to control the camera on the 3DS XL (a Circle Pad Pro XL would fix this). Second, the 3DS version doesn't have online play. Well, Nintendo has now announced that they have fixed one of these problems.

According to Nintendo Europe, they have an online play "workaround" for the 3DS version of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. This so-called "workaround" is being called Packet Relay Tools, which will be made available for free on the eShop on the Wii U.

In short, the app allows people to connect their 3DS systems to their Wii U console to play online. A few things are required in order for this to work. First, you obviously have to have a Wii U, a 3DS and a copy of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for the 3DS. Next, your Wii U console has to be connected to the internet via a Wii or Wii U LAN adapter. By using this setup, the 3DS can connect to the Wii U console to play Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate online.

It is important to note that, since the Wii U has to provide this function for the 3DS system, it is not possible to simultaneously play Wii U software while providing online play for the 3DS. It is not clear if this means that you can't play other Wii U games while using this app or if you just can't play other games besides Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. It may still be possible for your Wii U to provide internet play for someone playing the game on their 3DS while you are playing the game on the Wii U. We will let you know as more information is announced.

  1. Ho hum, sounds interesting but I'll stick with the Wii U version for online play, mostly because of two joysticks. I agree having only one joystick is annoying, especially after playing the demo on the 3ds, and the psp Monster Hunter, and yes I am aware the 3ds has locking on of some kind. I like controlling the camera myself lol.
